Getting a comparison people trust

A before-and-after only convinces when the only thing that changed is the thing you’re showing. Shoot both from the same spot, at the same height, with the same lens (don’t switch between the 1× and 0.5× camera), and in similar light. Daylight from the same window at the same time of day removes most colour differences.

The equal-square option crops both photos from the centre to the same shape. If one is slightly off-centre, crop it first in your phone’s photo editor, or use the collage maker (1 × 2 layout), where you can drag each photo inside its frame to line them up.

Questions

How do I make a before and after photo?

Choose the before photo, then the after photo. They are cropped to identical squares side by side, labelled “Before” and “After”. Change the labels, switch to stacked, and download.

What makes a good before and after comparison?

Same angle, same distance, same lighting and same framing. Take the after photo from where you stood for the before photo; the equal-square crop then lines up the two halves.

Can I change the labels?

Yes. Type any text up to 24 characters, for example “Day 1” and “Day 90”, “2016” and “2026”, or “Original” and “Restored”, and choose top or bottom placement.

Which layout is best for Instagram?

Side by side squares make a 2:1 image that Instagram shows smaller in the feed. Stacked makes a 1:2 image; Instagram crops tall posts to 4:5. For the feed, side by side then the add-border tool (pad to 4:5) keeps both halves whole.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, which matters for personal progress photos.
